Average temperatures continue to decline in the reaction area of Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility, continuing a trend that began roughly 10 months ago. In addition, settlement volume in the reaction area continues to steadily decline, which is a good indicator of a lessening in the intensity of the reaction. The supporting data was provided to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in Countywide’s recent weekly progress reports.

“These decreases in temperature and settlement indicate the reaction is slowly lessening,” said Tim Vandersall, PE, Countywide’s general manager. “Although some fluctuations in these readings are likely to occur, the overall trends show our remediation efforts are working.”

Additional field work progress includes:

installation of four vertical relief wells (completed March 22)
installation of 44 permanent dewatering pumps (completed)
installation of a 3,000 foot linear discharge line and a 10,3000 foot air supply line (completed)
installation of two compressors Completed, with a third to be installed in April)
installation of 14 new gas wells (in progress)
replacement of 22 gas wells (in progress)

During the upcoming months, dewatering activities will continue and the downward trend in average temperatures is expected to continue as well. The landfill has always cooperated fully with regulatory agencies and is committed to continuing to work proactively with all regulatory agencies.
