Trends in temperature and settlement at Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility have continued to decline for nearly a year. “This suggests the reaction is slowly lessening,” said Tim Vandersall, a Professional Engineer and Countywide’s General Manager.

The information in the attached charts is gathered by third-party specialty contractor AEG Environmental Ltd. In the temperatures chart, the average temperature is calculated on 200 to 250 sampling points each month. The temperatures collected and compared are the gas temperatures deep in the gas extraction wells. The same sampling points are compared each month and the resulting information is supplied to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA).

The second chart shows that settlement volume in the reaction area also continues to steadily decline, which is a good indicator of the intensity of the reaction.

“As our field work continues, we expect to see additional indicators that our remediation efforts are paying off,” Vandersall said.

Work toward the November 7 and December 31, 2007 Orders continues. Field work in progress includes:

During the upcoming months, activities related to dewatering the landfill will continue and, at this point, we expect the downward trend in temperatures to continue as well. The bottom line is the landfill is safe, the air at and around the landfill is safe and the groundwater is safe. This has been repeatedly documented by detailed groundwater and air tests, which continue today, and by the OEPA and countless third party experts. Countywide continues to work proactively to resolve issues at the site. The landfill has always cooperated fully with regulatory agencies and is committed to complying with requirements.
